I hate being up early in a weekend. Yes, I am aware hate is a very strong word. Alarm set for 630. Why? I need to take Emily’s car into the glass shop for a small repair. Last time it was an entire new windshield. That was two months ago. Recently, another rock hit not long thereafter. And I have been hearing about it ever since. “We” need to take the car in she says. Often enough to grate just a bit. I knew from the start I would be doing it myself. Car repairs require a Y chromosome I believe. So she caused it, sort of, I have to fix it the only part that bugs me is being up early Saturday. Of course, she is making me Beef Wellington for dinner tonight. It all works out.
I’m having pancake-meal for breakfast with cold brew. I make “oatmeal” style pancakes in a bowl with syrup. Actually quite good. Product of a kitchen accident years ago and now I make it on purpose. Gotta leave soon.
Got out of the house on time. Cruised to Safelite in Rocklin. Surprise, the shopping center they are in was previously owned by a client of mine. Small world. Meaningless really, just interesting.
Glass guys were on time and ready to go. Took less time than it takes to read a newspaper. I brought mine. Windshield looks great and cost 0. Now emiky can go do her rock magnet thing again.
Back home, and we start the house clean. Since we are having guests for my birthday tonight the house has to be cleaner. No problem here, I clean all the time.
Maybe four hours worth of cleaning. A trip to the grocers and Emily finished preparing the Wellington and scalloped potatoes. No big party tonight but the five of us will do well. We did have a last minute add on of two of my daughters friends so now seven.
Friend Bob arrived early and we celebrated with a cocktail. This was prophetic. Only I was not paying attention. I made Mai Tais. We sat around. Finished those. I made Old Fashioneds. Again, prophetic. I have got to pay attention in the future.
Friend Buck arrived about 630. He was working. Has two stores up in Tahoe and is always busy. He brought my present. The fixings for his version of a Mai Tai. So he made a pitcher of them. PROPHESY WARNING! For years I have said never make cocktails in a pitcher. Impossible to gauge your intake so you have no idea what the fuck you are doing. I really need to pay attention. I am much smarter, I think, than I acted. Buck also brought red wine. As had Bob. We drank three bottles at dinner. I think you can see where this is going.
Just before dinner, Marika got home and the other two, Jut and Geo, arrived. The meal was fabulous. I know I ate a plate. But, I was now blind drunk and my evening ended. Me in the can yakking. Oh boy.
I even missed the birthday cake. Too busy filling the sink. Then the can. Then I ended up in bed unconscious. Sound familiar to anyone?
Today is Monday. 720am. My hangover, hung over into last night and a little of today. This just for context.
So, I “slept” soundly Saturday night. You will never guess how I felt the next morning. Woke around 9. Wanted to puke. Didn’t. Massive headache. Pills. Dry as a bone. Lemonade and ginger courtesy of Emily.
I laid down for awhile. Maybe two hours. Em got pastries, which I tried. No coffee. Read the paper. Went back to bed for a couple hours, no sleep, just exhausted. Did finally get a shower in late afternoon and get dressed. Btw, never left the house except to put dog out. Em went to store. I did laundry and changed the sheets. And laid down for a few more. I am real tired. Had leftover wellie for dinner and this time I remember. Which is a good thing.
Went to bed soon after dinner. Still exhausted. Tomorrow is the Corp tax deadline and a hell of a Monday to boot.
I felt better on Monday am than on Sunday. No two day hangovers for me. Not this time. Although I was still very tired I did not have the headache and tummy flips.
I did everything as usual this morning. It’s raining here, like hell. No effect on me. Emily got out ok. She called me from the road, lots of flooding and heavy rain. She wanted me to drive carefully. Like I dont? Whatever.
Marika went with me to workout. Shocking. Her hangover hit her hard as well. But she got up and we hit the gym. Today’s workout was insane and really destroyed us. I picked it on purpose. Marika even quit on a couple exercises, only doing part of the set. I finished all my sets and all exercises. I am stronger than I was.
We finished up and I offered to take Marika out for a donut which is something we did hundreds of times when she was pre-school. It was our thing. Neither of us had any cash. Seems a problem. We did have cell phones with Apple Pay. Went to donut shop, they don’t take that. Cash or charge or even check. What to do? The gal behind the counter said she would give us coffee and donuts and we could pay later. I love this town. So, we had donuts. A nice respite from the downpour outside. Nicely the rain really lightened up while we were sitting there. Ahh, the magic of a good donut.
We headed home after. I put $20 in my wallet for later and the donut lady. I got ready, usual shower and shave. Dressed. Folded laundry and headed for work. Stopped on the way to pay for donuts and tip. Went to bank to deposit a check and then next door for a cold brew. Then to the salt mine.
Today is like any other deadline. Corp taxes due today. Lots of people interrupting the work flow. I had one couple come in and sit for 3 hours. Just to finish up their crap. It’s seven tax returns, so I am nice. But, they need to get moving. I have other clients to finish.
I spent the whole day head down trying to complete 3 or 4 returns. Which is very hard with all the interruptions I had. One client did not get anything to me by the time I left the office at six. But, he lives in Auburn, not far from me and came over after a dinner of hot soup and a salad. Quite nice in such a cold day. We got him e filed timely. And he went home.
No bad TV tonight. No time. I am in bed. A little light reading and my day will be over.
