Greek Wednesday

Today was like yesterday only my memory of today is almost complete. Almost.

As always, coffee and lunch and brekkies. Emily is in meetings all day and ordered a snack only lunch. Weird. Emiky to work.

Marika and I went to work out. Usual crap, we warmed up and met with Justin the trainer. He was a little chatty. Turns out he is leaving for Indonesia for two years. He will be out in two weeks. We discussed who would take his place for a few minutes. Then he says, “oh yeah, Megan (a trainer) died last weekend.” I think maybe he should have led with that news. Right? Is that crazy? I saw her last Thursday. It’s all a big mystery so far. Weird day. And then we worked out. Really screws with your head.

On the way home I detoured to Dunk n Run donuts. It’s weigh in day (158.2) and I wanted something I can’t eat. Apple fritter changed at last minute to Raspberry. Marika has a maple of and a glazed. We sat at the counter there, drank coffee and ate donuts. Good stuff.

To home. Did the usual. Almost. Swapped cars with Marika so she could drive a good clutch to her appointment in Davis. Hers is shot and headed for the shop. I went in and showered and changed.

I took the convertible to work. It has a fine clutch.

Work was not very exciting. 9/15 tax deadline is approaching so all I did was tax returns all day. Love my job. No visitors.

There’s the entire day in three lines. I need a better day. And more lines.

Great news. Marika made homemade Gyros, lamb, for dinner. The tzatziki sauce too. Just awesome. After a huge boring day at work I need a big finish. And, we had a bottle of champagne with wine ice cubes. Fancy.

It’s end of day. I’m tired from this morning. It’s only 9am and I am going to bed.

First Workday

My tummy hurts. Though I find it hard to believe it was last nights festivities, I suppose it probably was. Mixing Rye whiskey and red wine might be a killer. Not same drink, same evening. Although, in my defense, there is a drink that does just that. So who knows. And dinner last night was just great.

No matter what, Marika and I worked out this morning. It helps. I feel better. Not sure about her.

Went home after gym. Got ready for work. Marika went back to bed for 3 hours. We all have our thing.

It is Wednesday though I am writing about Tuesday. So I have lost something in the translation. Like everything that happened yesterday. Sorry.

So I worked all day and went home. No I didn’t. I met up with Marika and Emily on Roseville and we went to Chandos for taco Tuesday. I can remember that. Though, the original Chandos by my office is the best one.

Got home kinda late. I went into the office, Marika’s closet, and did my monthly billings. Most important day of the month, it’s how I get auto-paid.

That’s it. Off to bed. Early for a change. Of course I woke up an hour and a half before the alarm and did not go back to sleep.

Last Day

It’s Labor Day. Hurray for holidays but next one is Thanksgiving. The long haul. And no, Halloween does not count.

We hit up tired today. Emily said only an hour to finish off the shed, no more. Then we get to holiday. It is 345 and we are just finishing. So much for that. We received a lecture from our daughter that we always waste our weekends working and always have. Can’t say she is wrong. It’s been this way since I was a kid. Same for Emily. We just work 7 days a week. Maybe I can relax when I’m dead.

The shed is done inside. Outside, a few boxes of goodwill bound goods and a couple small boxes of my lifetime earthly treasures. Gotta find room for more stuff. Or finally toss it all. Tough choice.

We are going to relax for the rest of the afternoon hhahahahahahaha. Yes, that’s two hours out of a three day weekend. I do less work at the office. But, I think doing things around the house in the weekend is what my wife is programmed for. And I help. Marika blames her mother but it’s me too. I work too hard at home. I like the chores better than work at the office.

We also moved boxes out of the shed and put them in Marika’s room and in my shop, as made sense. So created more work neatening up later in those two spots. Oh well. Project for another time.

Just finished washing dishes and packing dishwasher. All the stuff we unpacked was dirty. Some of this has been stored for over two years. Not so great but at least we are getting there. It’s really been a two year move. I am exhausted.

We are having guests in a few. Marika’s buddy’s fro Dixon are coming by. I imagine I will be making cocktails in about fifteen minutes. They like booze. Emily will be going to the store in a few. We need groceries. Oh, news flash, the boys just called. They stopped at a local brewery on there way here. Plans change. At least it stays quiet. Marika left for beer town.

My turn to take a shower. Emily just emerged. About time. It’s 440pm and I finally get to clean and shave. Yikes.

I am going to the store now. Turns out all are coming to the house for drinks and dinner. The service here is impeccable. The food is sublime. I am sure that is why they are coming. Or maybe because the drinks and food are very good and free. Free is a hell of a driver.

Went to Safeway and got the required supplies. Not much actually. We are having meatloaf so the meal is mostly meat. Duh. We add in a veg side of green beans cuz the phrase is not “meat” it’s “meat and veg”. Came home and helped Emily put it together. Actually, I made her and I a Sazerac. Then I helped with dinner. Booze first, food later. It’s a rule. You could look it up.

The young uns showed up not much later. They decided to play cards or dominos. Not sure. I decided if they did not ask for a drink, fuck em. Took about twenty minutes for someone to ask and then it was an avalanche. No big deal. It’s what I do, make cocktails. So I made two Mojitos and two Old Fashioneds. I could do that all day. And I do mean all day.

They have all continued to play dominoes. Emily is slaving in the kitchen and I blog and think about a second drink. Not sure what. Maybe a whiskey cocktail. Maybe a Buster Brown.

So, dinner is ready plus 2nd cocktails for the bride and I. We decided to leave all the food in the kitchen for a buffet service. I think no one minds when they are getting fed. For free.

The meal was lively and loud, which makes it fun. No one really wanted seconds which is tough anyhow when firsts destroyed the meatloaf. No one provided the dessert so we brought out bags of every candy we had which made us all quite pleased. Why? I don’t know. Geo took home a bucket of red vines which is a sign of happiness I think.

Tomorrow is a workday and the boys ran out rather quickly after “dessert”. All of us is going back to work tomorrow, except my lovely daughter. She claims she will be working out with me. Seeing is believeing. See you am.

The Middle Day

That’s the day that gets beat up by the other two. Just because.

Emily did not attend yoga this morning. I am shocked. Shocked to find out she is not. Current claim: I will go tonight at 5. Sure she will. I do hope she does, but have little faith.

I tried my cold brew this morning. The maiden voyage. Actually quite good though not sure how much $aving I achieved. It was a pain to make it. And a pain to strain it. Twice. I will keep at it till I am happy with the product and see if I can get in the habit of making it every two to three days. I don’t know yet.

We had a nice slow Sunday morning. Breakfast, coffee, cold brew (yay) newspaper. Nice. It’s 1230 now and Marika just left for work. Em and I are going to try and finish the shed. I will tell you that the shed is a black hole. It may never be emptied. I just want room in it for the rest of Christmas and the car crap. If I do that, Emily’s workshop will be in better shape. More able to do her glass projects with the added elbow room. I have goals.

It’s 7pm. We just quit in the shed. What a nightmare. Still not done. Emily is working alongside me, prob a mistake considering her condition. Of course, I have been working all day even though my sciatica is killing me. No worries. Two more hours in the shed tomorrow should help is get close to done.

We went out to dinner. Neither of us is cooking tonight. Drove downtown to the dumpling house. We had been talking about it for some time. I ordered a large plate for a low price. Emily got Kung pao chicken and we shared both. A lovely meal interrupted only by 20 texts from friend Cissie. I prob should have told her I was eating. No worries.

After dinner we walked a. Lock down to the Annex for dessert. We had been there Friday evening and seen the new menu and wanted to try it. Also, Marika was working and we could say hi.

The peach cobbler was excellent. Hard to screw that up and they didn’t. Also had a dish of ice cream too. Splurge a little.

Finished and went home. Both exhausted.

Mean Saturday.

Day one of three. Nice slept late, till eight. Emily is going to yoga this morning so I got up with her to make breakfast and coffee. It’s a thing.

She dressed and got her shit together and we went to the car. Ok, pay attention. I got in the car to ride down for the paper. Emily went running up the back stairs because she forgot something. I hear a scream, look around, and she is splayed on the stairs. I ran over, she had tripped going up the stone steps and landed first on her knee on the sharp edge of the second slate step. Sliced open her knee to the cap, then fell forward and landed on her cheek. Abrasion slight, lots of little gravel stuck to her face. Definitely hurt. I ran to get ice packs, Emily did not want to get up. When I came back with ice, she was hobbling toward the house.

Well, what fun. I put her on the couch, raised the head and feet, iced both down. Calmed her down. Inspected the wound. Cleaned the knee with hydrogen peroxide. And left her to there for quite a while to convalesce. See, it can be exciting around here.

Emily did not go to yoga.

Now that I got her set I went about the regular morning. Made coffee, she still wants that. I had pancakes. And coffee. Today I’m trying my hand at cold brew, btw. Read the paper. Took a shower. Got ready for whatever we decide to do. Marika got up during this whole thing so I got to explain all that Emily could not. What fun!

This whole time, Emily stayed put on the couch. Just as I told her. She must really feel bad. She feels a little foolish too but I don’t see a reason for that. It’s called an accident for a reason. Around mid day Emily got up, took a shower, got dressed, and laid back down on the couch. Prob a good choice. All the movement did make her a little dizzy. More than usual.

We sat and watched god awful Saturday tv for another hour. Yikes. Then, she said she was ready for errands. To the car. I am driving. I’m not dizzy.

Lots of places to go. Tried to find a place to get a windshield repair. No luck. One place was gone and all others closed. Seems to me Saturday would be a busy day for auto repair and maybe someone would be open. No. Off that task.

Next up hardware store for things we can do without. Then to Big 5. We need a mattress, inflatable, for guests, since we lack an extra bedroom. Big 5 sells many and all are on sale this weekend. U can see why we went.

Next up a Target run. Mostly just for female personal hygiene products but since we are here, a few more things we could do without. It amazes.

Emily is moving slow through all of this. But she has not collapsed yet.

Next up groceries and a stop at the auto store for wax n dry. Grocery was all veg for salad and such for the weekend.

Finally home. Unpacked. Drive the car down to the garage. Because it’s down the hill. Duh. We are supposed to work on the shed today, clean out, etc. And Emily says she is game. Hold for an update.

Ok. So I put crap away from the trip to town. Made a quick? trip to the can. It happens. Cleaned up a little. Emily sat around. She has a decent excuse.

I went out to start the shed deconstruction, inside out. Got five or six boxes out and began. Goodwill pile. Throw away pile. Take to house pile. I found our missing kitchen implements. Finally. On our trip to town today we bought a strainer. It was in the shed. That’s going back.

Emily came out and we went through a few more shed boxes. Threw away more. Saved some. Tossed the rest. We spent about an hour out there. We got a very late start, after 5. Emily claims we can finish tomorrow. Very bold talk for a one legged school teacher.

Into the house. We are gonna bbq. Sausage. Side of spicy green beans. Salad. Good stuff. And, Emily has thrown enough subtle hints that I made her an Old Fashioned before all the dinner stuff.

We had a very pleasant dinner except I got called out cuz she thinks I shovel salad in instead of forking it. And? So what. Works for me.

Marika came in late in the evening and had the same meal. Sans cocktail. She did get some of the red wine I opened. Ok, too fruity Cabernet. I like tannic more.

Day is done. It’s late. Bedtime. Emily says she is going to yoga in the morning. I am willing to bet that will not happen. I’ve met this woman.
